Lynette Gillis Appointed Chair of ASTD Certification Commission Toronto, November 30, 2002 The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) has chosen Dr. Lynette Gillis, President of Learning Designs Online Inc., to spearhead an extensive development effort to create the world’s first eLearning quality certification program. Dr. Gillis has been appointed Chair of the newly created ASTD Certification Commission. The new eLearning initiative, designed to evaluate and provide certification for eLearning courseware, is expected to set industry benchmarks for quality and effectiveness for the growing online learning industry.
ASTD selected Dr. Gillis to head its new quality certification efforts as a result of her broad industry experience in the development and implementation of eLearning quality evaluations systems. As well, the organization identified her book, Quality Standards for evaluating Multimedia and Online Training, as the ‘most comprehensive’ and the ‘most useful’ system currently available for evaluating courseware quality. ASTD plans to use the Quality Standards to ‘leapfrog the standards development process and serve as a foundation for the certification effort.
To assist her in creating the new standards, Dr. Gillis has assembled an extraordinarily qualified team of academic and industry experts representing some of the world’s leading thinkers in learning, cognition and instructional design. The working commission—in effect, an eLearning quality “dream team”—includes: Dr. David Merrill, Dr. Ruth Clark, Dr. Rich Mayer, Dr. Bill Coscarelli, Dr. Sharon Shrock, and Bill Horton among others.
